EXPERTISE RATINGS

EXPERTISE RATINGS

When you know a lawyer's Meisterline Index expertise rating (measured on a scale from 0.1 to 9.9), you can easily determine their level of expertise in a given area of law and whether or not they have the cognitive skills and abilities required for a particular legal task, case or project.

You can also compare their expertise directly with the expertise of other legal specialists.

HOW OUR RATINGS WORK

HOW OUR RATINGS WORK

Meisterline Index expertise ratings are an objective quantification of a lawyer’s level of specialist expertise. More technically, they represent points along a continuum of cognitive development associated with technical and conceptual ability in specific areas of legal practice.

With a lawyer's Meisterline Index rating, you can find where they're positioned within their ratings band, and from there identify those cognitive skills and abilities associated with that positioning. This information will help you assess how expert they are and how well they are likely to perform at different levels of responsibility within their areas of legal specialization.

For instance, you wouldn't ask a merely competent antitrust lawyer (say, one with an expertise rating of 3.5) to advise on a controversial M&A deal or a complex global distribution agreement. At the same time, it would be inefficient to engage an expert rated at 8.9 to perform straightforward, mid-level tasks for which a proficient specialist rated at, say, 6.0 would be better suited.

Without knowing individual lawyers' specific expertise ratings and understanding what they represent, navigating these kinds of attorney-selection decisions becomes, at best, a predominantly subjective exercise, and at worst, pure guesswork.

NOTE: The ratings bands descriptions that follow are not definitive statements of how any individual lawyer actually thinks. Rather, they are approximations of the cognitive profiles of lawyers at different stages of their development as measured on the Meisterline Index. Moreover, these descriptions highlight only those cognitive traits and abilities most evident at the midpoints of each ratings band. Lower or higher ratings within a band imply a blurring of traits and abilities with those legal specialists in immediately lower or higher bands, respectively.*

* Accordingly, while a number of legal specialists may be assessed to be within the same ratings band, those individuals with a higher/lower expertise rating in that band are likely to possess more of the cognitive traits of legal specialists in the next band up/down. These blending dynamics are discussed on a lawyer-by-lawyer basis in the Intra-Band Analysis set out in our individual Meisterline Index Development Reports.

These ratings bands descriptions only apply to the area of law for which the lawyer in question has been assessed. They do not indicate how that lawyer might think in other areas of legal specialization (separate assessments can be undertaken for them) or in more general contexts. They do not signify anything in terms of an individual's intelligence or personality.

These ratings also ignore traditional position titles and any capabilities a lawyer may have relevant to other aspects of legal practice, such as their management ability, client service skills or business-development potential. The focus here is solely on their cognitive development (in terms of so-called technical or ‘hard’ skills) within a given area of legal specialization.
