BAND 6 - MASTER *

BAND 6 - MASTER *

Band 6 legal specialists have most or all the cognitive abilities of their Band 5 colleagues, but with a more highly-developed intuitive sense. This added advantage, combined with greater experience-tested confidence, can enable them to engage more effectively with particularly sensitive issues, as well as high-complexity, data-overload scenarios.

●   Typically highly confident and effective decision-makers with strong opinions.

●   Because of their deep conceptualisation, they can present and adapt a compelling vision of what needs to be done to achieve a required outcome.

●   High-level strategic advice can be especially valuable to clients and, while they have a large repertoire of capabilities, they may be known for favouring some approaches over others.

●   Tacit knowledge is very deep and often reflected in an uncanny sense of knowing what will work and what won’t in terms of the real-world execution of alternative strategies.

●   Sometimes benefit from the support of lower level specialists to keep up with latest developments at a technical level, but also able to transcend the details when required.

●   Ideal team leaders/members in complex, atypical and high-stakes matters.

Band 6 legal specialists represent the highest-level of specialist legal expertise, with their cognitive development fitting the traditional definition of a Master. These lawyers are among the elite in the relevant area of law. Their influence on the standards and practices in this area, both procedural and substantive, is likely to be widely acknowledged. They’re also likely to be identified by other legal experts in their field to be “the” experts or the “real” experts in the area, possibly with some reference to a highly-specialised sub-domain with less well-known technicalities.

Lawyers at this level can be generally relied upon to provide both accurate and highly-actionable legal-risk assessments based on substantive legal, policy and technical analyses, and to do so with unlaboured reasoning. They are generally faster at identifying key issues than any other level of legal specialist, and their use of relevant analogies and appropriate heuristics enables them to deliver high-quality results for clients, sometimes with unusual efficiency. Band 6 legal specialists tend to spend proportionally more time than their lower-level colleagues confirming factual details and when thinking through the implications of their advice and strategies (though their overall assessment time can still be less). Their highly-developed intuitive abilities enable them to quickly prioritize and choose between a limited number of high-quality options. The clarity of their thinking can be most evident in seemingly simple solutions to complex legal problems.

* NOTES

1. This ratings band description is not a definitive statement of how any individual lawyer actually thinks. Rather, it is provided as a descriptive approximation of the cognitive profiles of legal specialists at a defined stage of their development as measured on the Meisterline Index rating scale.

2. This ratings band description highlights only those cognitive traits and abilities most evident at the midpoint of this ratings band. Lower and higher ratings within this band imply a blurring of traits and abilities with those legal specialists in immediately lower and immediately higher bands, respectively. While a number of legal specialists may, by virtue of their individual expertise ratings, be assessed to be within this ratings band, those individuals with a higher (or a lower) rating in that band can be assumed to possess more of the cognitive traits of legal specialists in the next band up (or down). These blending dynamics are discussed on a lawyer-by-lawyer basis in the Intra-Band Analysis provided in our individual Meisterline Index Development Reports.

3. This ratings band description only applies to the area of law for which the lawyer in question has been assessed. It does not indicate how that lawyer might think in other areas of legal specialization (separate assessments can be undertaken for them) or in more general contexts. It is entirely possible, and to be expected, that a lawyer will receive different ratings for different areas of law.

4. This ratings band description ignores traditional position titles and any capabilities a lawyer may have relevant to other aspects of legal practice, such as their management ability, client service skills or business-development potential. The focus of the Meisterline Index is solely on a legal practitioner’s cognitive development (in terms of so-called technical or ‘hard’ skills) within a given area of legal specialization.
